Leather Laptop Bag - Is it Worth the Extra Money?
By Aaron Benjamin Williams

You just spent hundreds of dollars on a new laptop computer. This is the appliance that will get aid you in your business, will serve as the gateway for many of your social interactions, and will impress your friends and rivals alike. Now, you need something to carry it in.

In the most basic of terms, you have two choices in deciding what to put your newest high tech toy in: A leather laptop bag or a not leather type. The choices under 'not leather' include a variety of canvas, polyester, nylon and faux leather. They come with a vast array of features, price points starting as low as twenty dollars, going as high is the cost of your new laptop. The main downside to any of these bags is this: None of them are made from leather.

The right leather laptop bag offers a level of durability that far exceeds that of most fabric materials. It will outlast a comparable fabric bag, and will look a lot better doing it. Long after that canvas case has been replaced, possibly multiple times, the right leather bag will still soldier on.

In addition to added durability, a leather laptop bag gives a professional appearance to the person using it. In today's competitive employment, adding the sheen of professionalism to your resume can only help.

This is not to say that all leather materials are the same. When shopping for a leather laptop bag it is important to find one that has the organizational capacity your lifestyle requires as well as the padding your laptop requires. A thick, full grain leather (cow, not lamb or pig) is vital for the durability you seek.

A leather laptop bag is sold as either full grain or some variety of split grain. Split is exactly that. The hide is thinner, less durable and shows wear more readily because of it. If you are going to go leather, invest in full grain. It won't have to be replaced due to looking worn and horribly abused. If split grain leather gets a scratch or gouge, you can polish it and you still have a piece of leather with a scratch or gouge. If full grain leather gets a scratch or gouge, polishing it turns the scratch into just another characteristic of the patina of the leather.

A good quality leather laptop bag will not show its age with the proper care. It is an investment, much the same way that your laptop is an investment. It helps to protect one of your most valuable tools while showing the world that you are a professional with professional, classy tastes.

You can certainly go to your local discount store and pick up an inexpensive one in which to keep your laptop. The question is why would you? Why buy what is basically a disposable case that will need replacing frequently and that will look like you got it at a discount store? Invest in a quality case that will both protect your investment and that will speak to your professionalism for years to come.
